1 At the annual meeting of the >'ew Brighton i'ire .Brigade the following i motion was carried: —"lhat the niom- ! bens of the New Brighton Fire brigade desire to express then - sincere sympathy • with Fireman W. Neate and "mose of ] his family in their recent wvci bere-ave- ■ incut." The report dealt with the work done by the brigade's team at the recent demonstration. The balance-siieet showed a credit balance of .t'7 3s od. Tho election 01 officers resulted as follows:—JMijieriiiteniient, A. Gale; de-puty-superintendent, A. J. .Mason; engineer 'pro tern), T. J,aiuont; Ist branci-.rnnn, T. ilobbs; branchman, T. Lamont; ladder man, l<. Hill; librarian, .Superintendent A. Gale; custodian, A. J. Mason; treasurer, i. Winter: secretary (pro tern), l<. —ill. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers. It was ih-cidcd to hold the* annual social and dance in the t'ler Hall on May 16th. and at tho function to present the prizes and medals won and earned by members. The resignation of Fireman W. JNieate, who is leaving the Borough, was accepted .with regret. Superintendent Gale stated that he desired to thank all those residents and others who had so splendidly supported the brigade financially during the year, particularly tho Gala Committee, Capt. A. \\ . Owles, Mr H. Forwood, and Mr J. uowio. J Company Const Defence Territorials paraded on Saturday at- 2 p.m., under Lieutenants Corsori and It. Hopkins. There was a good muster, notwithstanding the bad weather. The company wero exercised in attack formation, and returned to headquarters at 6.30 p.m., having put in four and a half hours' solid work. .Subscription lists are being circulated for tho purpose, of providing funds for the purchase of a side drum nnd football for the local Senior Cadet Corps (No. 75) Territorials, and the officer commanding desires to acknowledge tho receipt of one guinea from Councillor A. TV. Gwle.v

There are a number of buildings in course of erection Just now within tho borough, and as it is understood that tenders close this week for tho Presbyterian hall ami-the Surf Club pavilion, the local builders should have tlieir hands full for a season, and should tho proposed picture palace for New Brighton, for which a site has already been purchased, ecentuate, will certainly help towards that end.

It is hoped by all p..rents and guardians that the new School Committee will endeavour to secure moro accommodation for the children. In ono or two of the classrooms the space :.s terribly congested, and this state of tilings cannot remain. For upwards of ninety children to be veritably "herded" together in space provided for forty, is, as Dr. Stevens says, simply an invitation to tonsilitis, tuberculosis, and other like diseases to come and reap a rich harvest.
