THE ELECTIONS.
AN INCORRECT STATEMENT,
Mr G. W. Hulme, Returning Officer, was seen yesterday with referenco to a paragraph which appeared in one of the jocal papers. The paragraph was as follows:—"A gentleman who has been interested in local elections for many years told a reporter on Saturday that the petition lodged by the Social Democrats asking for a review of the counting in the Lmwood Ward would serve a very useful purpose in directing attention to what he considered to be a detect in the Municipal Corporations law. He added that at one of the Linwood booths the number of ballot-papers returned as having wen used in connection with the election of councillors was 374, and the maximum number of valid Votes that could be cant was three limes that number, or 1122, yet the aggre- ; gate oi voms for mc seven canuiuutes I totalled 1209. Four papers were rejected as informal." "The official return at the polling i place referred to," said Mr Hulme, i "discloses the fact that 425 ballot papers had been issued, and that 374 were returned unused. The maximum number of votes that could be cast was , 1275, and the aggregate votes for the i seven candidates totalled 1209."
