ANNUAL JOURNAL

The Canterbury A. and P. Association abandoned, during the- past year, tha publication of a bi-monthly journal, and in its place substituted a Journal, to be published annually. The new Journal is on the lines of tho Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England. The first volumo of the now Journal, edited by Mr M. Murphy, has just been issued. It not only forms a record of the year's operations of tho Socety, but it contains a number of interesting and practical articles bearing upon th« work of the farmer and stock-owner. As the coming Show in November next will-mark the jubilee of the Association, tho editor has taken the opportunity of reviewing the progress of tho Association during tho fifty years it has been established. This contains a largo amount of interesting information that old members will find refreshing to their memories, and to the younger generation it will be instructive, as showing how comprehensire have been tho undertakings of the Association. An artido bearing upon the efforts of farmers in tho direction of promoting the interest? of their call'ng, is ono on tho work and aims of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, contributed by Sir J. G. Wilson, Dominion president. A further scheme to benefit agriculture is Lord Islington's proposal for tho establishment of a Chamber of Agriculture, the full test of which is published. A review is also given of the* agricultural J and pn?tiral year in Canterbury. Among the special articles are:—"Agricultural Ednention," by Mr It. E. Gray, lecturer on chemistry at Canterbury Agricultural College"; "Making a Home," by Mr J. C N. Grigg. There are reports of the Canterbury Provincial Agricultural Conference, held in July last, tho Ram and Ewe Fair in March last, anc' records of tho merino-scouring competition ; and lnlfbred i and Oorriedalo competitions, and of the Metropolitan Show held in November last. The Journal concludes with a report of the last annual meeting of tlie Association, and a copy of the annual balancesheet end the list of officers for the ■current year. Inserted in the Journal is a special leaf, drawing attention to tho scheme for tho wiping out of tho debt upon the Show Ground, and securing new members during the com ing year. Attached 'is a nomination form for membership. The Journal is exceptionally well got-up, and contains a portrait of Mr J. D. Hall, the president for tho past year, and photo engraving* of the champion stock at the Suow. The Journal was printed by th«» Christchurch Press Company.
