THE SUMNER CAUSEWAY
DISCUSSION BY THE TRAMWAY
BOARD
A letter from the Town Clerk of Sumner, stating that tho Sumner Borough Council desired that the cost of the tramway causeway only should "bo referred to a commissioner, was 'uriefly discussed at yesterday's meeting of the Tramway Board.
It was pointed out that a new Council had been elected since the letter v.-jxs written, and that, possibly, the new Council might have a different opinion on tho subject. It was decided to receive tho letter, and hold it over, pending the matter being further discussed by the Council.
Tho Chairman (Mr Geo. T. Booth) proposed that steps should be taken to ascertain what the proportions of the traffic are beforo the Commission s appointed. .'ifr C. 31. Gray: If we are going to have a causeway, I don't see the necessity for a Commission. We shall have to pay the bill. Would it not be cheaper to have a bridge, or viaduct. Then the Borough Council would not get the benefit of the breastwork we erect.
Mr Beaven asked if the Sumner Borough Council had abandoned the idea of a combined causeway and roadway.
I'he Chairman: They were informed tliat we could not contribute to the cost of a roadway. The Hon. J. Barr said that the legal opinion obtained was to the effect that the Board could not act in conjunction with the Council as far as the roadway was concerned. Although Ihere was a new Borough .Council, the majority were old members, and it was possible that the Council would take up the same attitude as the old Council. The statement that the causeway would cost the Council nothing was absolutely incorrect, and was on a par with the statements that the Council intended building bungalows under the cliffs. The motion was agreed to.
