NON-PAYMENT OF FINE.
ARREST OF P. C. WEBB, AND
SUBSEQUENT RELEASE
•Mr P. C. WebbL President of tho New Zealand f Federation of Labour, was reported, earlier in tho .week, to have given himself up to tho police authorities in connection with his failure to pay the fine imposed on him for having, with others, caused traffic to be obstructed at the Clock Tower. This information was inaccurate, and it was only on Friday that Mr Webb was arrested.
Enquiries made at tho Trades' Hall Drought forth tho information that Mr Webb's last words to his friends were: "Don't pay tho > fine." His friends stated that if they could prevent it they would not let anyone pay tho fine. Mr Webb's sentence, in default oP tho fine.being paid, was one month's imprisonment, with hard labour.
Despite Mr Webb'a expressed wish and tne efforts of his friends, it appears that someono did pay his line, an he was liberated from tho Lyttelton gaol at mid-day on Saturday.
