The collection of rainfall statistics inaugurated in tho chief centres of population in New Zealand away back in the 'fifties has heen gradually extended around tho- coasts, and to a certain extent inland, hy the meteorological office, but in connection with the forecast of river Hoods and the development of water-power, these coastal stations have proved insuliicient. In order to meet these requirements, a largo number of rain gauges were recently obtained with tho objc-i of establishing additional stations on high lands ami at the sources aim along the banks of the principal rivers. It is anticipated that these v.-iil yield'a large mass of additional information, which will be ot the greatest commercial advantage in future years'. Miin> of these, stnthnu* will he established in connection with country po.-'. offices, but applications will be welcome-.! from private persons interested in the rainfall who are prepared to undertake th < duty of ob?,ervat,ioi*. Such applicants will be supplied with lain gauges and necessary instructions by tho Dominion Meteorologist, and the resultr. will ho recorded and published in the ''Gazette" with the other meteorological observations, and utilised in the meteorological survey of New Zealand. A'l important aspect of this work will be' the fuller observation of rivers and the possibilities of floods n the lower reaches subject to inundation.
