GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS.

(IIV OUR COMMERCIAL EDITOR.) Tuesday Evening- | Our London correspondent writing on! Jan v;. ry 171 h, say s: — j "There has been an improvement in j the enquiry for New Zealand wheat- j and larger'sales have been possible, at j prices ranging from 36s to 37s per , irtGlb. Messrs Weddel and Co. say | there is still nothing being done on a forward or c.i.f. basis. ■•Heavy offering-, of New Zealand oats continue'to attract only .small attention and business is very difficult to conclude. Prices of A grade Gartons are quoted at 25s 9d to 'ills 3d for the best samples, and others 25s to 25s 3d : A Sparrowbills 24s 3d to 21s 9d. B grade 23s 3d to 23s Hd. Duns 23s to 23s od. and Blacks 24s to 24s 3d. as to quality, per 3201b, 'There is no change to report in peas, and New Zealand -Maples meet with a retail trade at 3<is to 10s per 50)lb according to sample. Some t.a.q. afloat to" West Coast changed hands a. 37s Od per 5011b, c.i.f. "New Zealand beans are well enquired for, and aro now quoted at 39s to 40s per 50411..'' The local wheat market is a little firmer though the demand is purely local. The fact that besides the area being shorter the yields are much below those-of last your is affecting me position. The grain, however, -has been harvested under generally favourable conditions and beyond some of the samples being on the thin side there will be little or no damaged grain. Tuscan is now (inoted at 3s 5d to 3s s_d, Hunters 3s tjsi\ to 3s fid. and Pearl 3s Old to 3s 7d. The oats market on tho other hand has a still easier tone, as no business can be done with the North Island on the basis of present values. Buyers for the time being are therefore not operating, and at the samo time growers aro not prepared to accept lower prices. The cocksfoot market is much easier since it opened, and for Peninsula seed-3d to 3.-d is all that is being offered and the demand is not very keen. Very little business is being done in new ryegrass as the samples aro too light to command any attention. The offerings of good seed aro unusually small this season. Tho undermentioned are tho prices paid to farmers at country stations, free of commission, except where otherwise stated: — New Wheat—3s 3d to 3s s._d for Tußr-. can. 3s o_d to 3s 6d for Hunters, and 3s 6d to 3s 6Jd to 3s 7d for Pearl, at country stations.
