THE SUFFRAGETTES.
TO THE EDITOR OF ''TUB TRESS. 5 ' Sir,—Judging by your editorials of tho 21st instant ; you are strongly opposed to. tho militant methods of the Suffragettes of tho Old Country. Now, lam a besotted old bachelor of forty with all the finer sentiments blunted, yet, if I were pnce again living in England, I should ask myself this plain question: What right havo I to dictate to any woman and assume sho has not an equal right with me in making tho laws that govern us? And ' thero aro worse men than myself. Her influence ivill tend to improve tho moral laws which after all are tho most important. Can you or any .0110 else say that woman's franchise has proved harmful or expensive in theso islands? The women at Homo have an undoubted moral right to their vote, so procrastination is useless. Statesmen should forego their pride and prejudice, for it is not a question of cowardice, and submit. • It is just another rightful step in. the process of evolution, so w;hy say to them, "No, we shall not give you the vote so long as you are naughty." Had they no moral right to the vote. I should feel with you that they should bo mado to respect tho law that protects them at any cost. Their methods may bo questioned, but few reforms of the past have been secured by peaceful means, unless of course, wise statesmen havo been in power. To allow tlio public to deal with them would end disastrously, for the Suffracettes have many mon sympathisers. ' Besides, two wrongs do not mako a right.—Yours, etc., AN IMMIGRANT.
