WELLS DEFEATS MEHEGAN. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, February 2_. Matt Wells, ex-champion light-weight o England, defeated Huguie Mehegan, champion of AustraJia, on points, in a contest at the National Sporting Chib, London, which went the full twenty rounds. Wells weighed 9st 9J!b, while Mehegan scaled 9st 7_ib, and the former was a slight favourite Tho fignt was not by any means a satisfactory one, as up to the fifteenth round thero was a grea» deal of clinching. Wells scored well at every opportunity, and in tho open fighting lteqnently got in straight lefts, to which the Australian failed to reply. In the sixteenth round Mehegan improved a good deal, and being the stronger, scored freely up to the last round, but he was unable to' overhaul the large number of points his opponent had scored in tho earlier part of the light. He finished - strongly, while Wells was evidently tiring fast. The referee's decision in favour of Webs was generally well received, but there wero some dissentient voices. The fight was for a purse of £300, the wianor to take £625, and the loser J. 275. Wells and Mehegan met some time ago, when the Englishman was disqualified after th«. fourteenth round for hitting his opponent after the gong had sounded.
