"POOR L.E.G."
TRIBUTE TO CAPTAIN OATES. Captain F. W. Barton, who was associated , with the late Captain Oates in the Imuskilling Dragoons, in an interview at Bathurst, New South Wales, last week, said: —"Captain Oates was the most stalwart man I ever met. I was officer in the Inniskilling Dragoon Guards in 1905. He was a most unassuming man. He was always ready to go and help with a difficult work, or engage in exnloration, but he was always reticent about anything ho did. Ho was a clever officer beyond the ordinary sort. When I heard of his death I said. 'Poor L.E.G.' That was what wo called him. I cannot explain how 1 felt. I almost broke down. Thero is_ cue thing I must say. He was the best officer I ever knew. Ho could uso his men with tact, and could got moro out of them than any officer with whom I am acquainted. Ho was always good to his men. and they would do anything for him. During my "time in the regiment ho was always saying that he was going to look for something better. Ho was i great geologist, and nothing was too hard for him to do; poo* 'L.E.G.' "
