PAPANUI TRAMWAY EXTENSION.
A correspondent writes .- —The residents of Papanui and Sxyx have' tor several years recognised, the extension o- the tramway service to Northcote road along the North road as a necessity, and have on. several occasions made. strenuous appeals to the Tramway Board to allow the proposal to be adopted. It was not until several enthusiastic public meetings were held that the Board granted a poll being taken to raise a loan of £'9000 to carry'out the work. .Tin poll was carried by an overwhelming tnajorit-v, and it is greatly due to Messrs "F. • Sif_on. T. H. Caverhill, R. W. Hawke, A. Hopkins, and T. Honsha.l, who were conspicuous in their endeavours for tho successful result of the proposal. The extension is now completed, and the Board is to becongratulated for. tiie expeditious manner in which the work hag bee.l done. The line will be much appreciated by a large number of residents, extending as tur as Belfast. It will no doubt induce a large influx of people to settle in the district, as the land is suitable for resident-! purposes, and is claimed to be some of . the richest and most fertile soil in , Canterbury, besides being fully, forty feet higher than Christchurch abovn sen level. The official opening will | take place next Friday afternoon, and a reeeptidn will be held in the Waimairi County Council Chambers . immediately after.
