RIFLE SHOOTING.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The third and concluding day ol tho meeting at Redcliffs was commenced in a series of showers, and with tho heavy banks of cloud, all round the outlook for a fine day was cot very promising, while a fairly strong wind from the sou-west -was not acceptable. A strong choppy sou -west wind with occasional showers of rain was experienced all the morning. Six teams entered for tho Champion Teams' Match, viz., Christchurch Rifle Ciub No. 1, Christchurch Rifle Clnb No. 2, Scargill Rifle Club, Wakanui Rifle Club, Glenavy Rifle Club, and Christchurch Veterans' Rifle Club. The challenge and special trophies were open only to members of the Defonc. Force of New Zealand, and are as follow: — Watkinson Challenge Shield, for Champion Teams' Hatch, value 50 guineas, the Shield to be held by the winning team for one year, and if won threo times in succession by a t„m composed of the same five men, or five times at intervals by any team of a corps or rifle club, it will become tho property of the corps or club, ond the individual winner may be decided by a shoot-off by tho members of the winning team at 200, 500 and GOO yards, and it shall then become the absolute property of the winner. Trophy presented by the Hon. LieutenantColonel "R. H. Rhodes, for the highest aggregate at the longest ranges in Matches _\ - os. 1, 2, 3, and 4. "Winner to hold trophy for twelve months. Trophy presented by Messrs Stewart, Dawson and Co., to the highest competitor in final stages of the King's Match. Winner to hold trophy for twelve months. If won twice in succession or threo times at intervals to become the property of the winner. Winner to hold the cup for twelve months. Cup presented by tho lato Mr Geo, G. Stead, to the highest tyro in Matches Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Winner to hold cup for twelve months. Cup presented by the late Mr Geo. G. Stead, to tho highest competitor under 21 years in Matches Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Winner to hold tho trophy for twelve months. Considering tho very liberal amount of money and valuable trophies offered at this meeting, it is surprising that there were not a great many more competitors, and thoso who did not enter will no doubt be inclined to think that they missed a, good thing. It is certain that the introduction of the new military system has interfered somewhat with tho entries. Most of.those now enrolled are vory young, but as they get moro staid and seasoned to the work they will naturally cultivate a stronger desire for taking part in prize shooting meetings, which, in most cases, takes a number of years. The Committee of Management may safely look forward to this meeting becoming each year more and more popular. The Executive is to be congratulated upon the way the arrangements have been carried out. The honorary secretary and treasurer (Rifleman J. Timbrell) haa "been most indefatigable, and, with the assistance of Staff SeTgcant-Majors Grover, Massey, Le Mottee. Crampton, and Culley, of tho New Zealand Permanent Staff, the work in his department was all that could be desired, end tho Press wishes to thank the officers and him for their assistance and courtesy during the meeting. The register-keepers and markers are also to be congratu-ted upon their work.' The very email percentage of shots challenged speaks well for tho marking. After lunch a meeting of rifle clubs representatives was held, and presided over by Mr Angus Cameron (president of tho Scargill Riflo Club, and a vice-president of the I Association), at which the incorporation of I tho South island Riflo Association into the I newly formed Canterbury Military District Rifle Association was approved. | The four Riflo Club delegates were unanimously re-elected. Punctually at 2.15 p.m. the King's Match commenced. Open to the twenty-four highest aggregate scorers in Matches Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 1. Ten shots at 700 yds. The scores made at thiß range will be added to the aggregate of Matches Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 to decide the prize winners. The winner to hold the South Island Championship Belt (presented by the Licensed Victuallers' Association, Christchurch) for one year. . ■ Ono prize of £5 (given by the Hon. C. Louisson, M.L.C.), the champion belt and gold medal. One prize of _E3, two of £2, four of J.l, and aix of 10s. This match was to havo been competed for at the 9Ooyds range, but, owing to the targets not being received from town in time, the 700 yds range was substituted. Throughout the match tho light was steady, but there waa a very strong, choppy, "fish-tail" wind down the rani?o. No deposit was made for shots challenged during this match,, and consequently tho telephono was.kept very busy, but, with one or two exceptions, the reply was, "clean target." . ' Amongst the visitors on tho range m tho afternoon were tho Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. Holland), the Hon. C. Louisson, M.L.C., Major AY. R. Pinwill, G. 5.0., Lieut.Colonel Smith, M.L.C., and a number of ladies. After the King's Match was decided, the Honourable C. Louisson, --..L.C., in tho unavoidable absence of Colonel Smythe (Commanding Canterbury Military District), distributed the prizes, and, in a few appropriate remarks, advised all young men to do their duty and enjoy tho healthfulness to be gained, both bodily and mentally, by military training, and the meeting ended by afternoon tea being dispensed in the luncheon marquee.
