NELSON, February 11. "He would die hard," were the words of a steward on the Pateena, when handed the special edition of tho "Mail" containing the news of the death of Captain Scott and his party. "I sailed with him on the warship Essex. He was a splendid man, and would be the last to give in. He was a man of groat foresight, and mado preparations, even to the merest detail, weeks in advance."
