« TEST .-IK DAY'S MEETING. i The Christehurch Tramway Hoard ;' mot yt'f>to!flny, whon there wero present :—Messrs Gco. T. Hooth (Chairman). I). Sykes. C. -M. Gray, J. A. Floshcr, H. Pearce. A. W. Beuven and th<! Hon. J. Barr. i Mr P. A. Staples, who wrote apolo- ! giving for absence, expressed the hope j that. tho matte;- r»i' concision fares j would bo referred to the Fares' Com- ! initteo. A PENNY SECTION. i A doyiitation from residents of i Philhpstmvn wtr.tcd on the Hoard j protesting agrtinst the shortening lof the first penny section from town ion the- Ferry Dad line-. ! Mr W. \V. Tanner, who headed the j deputation, presented a memorial of ; protest ?ig;ied by about 300 residents j in the vicinity of the present penny section stopping place- at Lancaster Park. ' The deputation did not want a favour, I only justice. Jf tho finances oF the j Board so reijuirod then no objection ! would be inaUt' to tlie shortening of the ! (section provj.Jnsg all other first outi ward penny sections were reduced 10 ••' tho saino length as tlie proposed new i penny .section from the city to Fitzgeri aid aveuu". There was the danger 1 that if the section were reduced many i poop'.o Mho now used the cars would J cef.se ck>inyr so. The deputation wero i not. .satisfied with the statement made ! that the Woolston lino was bein-; eonj ducted at a loss. He had l>cen inj formed that tlio fares taken on care No. <i wore credited to .Simmer wheivqs j tho hulk of tho traffic was Woolston j traffic and should be eiedited as such, j Mr H. W. Palmer, who also spoke, j said the average, length of iirst penny j j=pe.tioiv. in tho city was ft 3 chains. Tlio i distance on tlie Ferry road isrst «»c----j lion was P0 chains to Lancaster lark, j while to Fitzgerald avenue the distance was only (iU chains j Tlie Chairman said that the lengthouj ing oi tho first penny section, mndo j two years ago. from Fitzgerald avenue jto Lancaster Park had resulted in a I loss. relatively. It tho length iof the ;irst penny sections were calculated from tho Square instead lof from tho furthest limits of tho J central neutral area, as tho deputation I had calculated them, it would be j found that the Lancaster Park section J would be considerably over the average, j while the Fitzgerald Avenue section I would bo just below the average. Mr Sykes moved tlint the Board could not see its way to grant the request of tho deputation. Tho lengthening of the section from the Avenno to the Park was intended only to be an j experiment, the previous section to be reverted to in tho event of the change ; not proving successful. ■ } Mr C. M. Gray, who seconded the i motion, said that if the attitude taken !up by the deputation was a sample of I what might be expected from those l affected by fare on section changes, j then the Board would have a difficult row to hoo in carrying out the ocono mies proposed. lfc was impossible to make all first iionny sections an oqunl length, for tlie nature of the lines and tho convenience of the people had to be considered. Mr Pearco said that if the Ferry road section was to be shortened because the I line was not paying, then all other lines that were not paying should be dealt with, and from the traffic report presented at the last meeting of the Doard only two lines. —New Brighton and Edgowaro, road-Cnshmere Hills — wero paying their way. lie considered that the wholo system should bo reviewed, and a comprehensive report dealing with fares and sections generally should be brought up. He would , like to see the matter of the Ferry road section referred back for further consideration. Tho Chairman said that for six months past strenuous efforts were made to deal with the matter in globo, but the Board were not mifficiently of one mind to enable anything to be ■done, and the matter was referred to the committee practically with instructions to deal with it piecemeal, as being the only method possible. r Tho Hon. J. Barr moved an amendment that tho matter of the Lancaster Park section should be held over in order that all other similar sections might be considered at the same time. That would enable all tho sections to ho dealt with simultaneously and equitably. Tho Chairman, said that in the face of tho resolution on the book he could not accept Mr Barr's proposal as an amendment:. Tlie motion was then put and carried. WORKS ANT> TRAFFIC COMMITTEE. The Works and Traffic Committee reported that in consequence ol the representations of tho Lytteltcui Progress League and the Rangiora Borough •Council, arrangements had been mado for a- car to leave tho station at 9.55 a.m. to servo tho needs of passengers arriving by train at that hour. The boundaries <i the St. Martin's tramway special rating area had been considered and slightly amended, and the comnr.itteo recommended their adoption. The report was adopted. A DAY IN CHRISTCHURCH. i Tho manager of the Union Steam i Ship Company wrote stating that I copies of the Board's leaflet, "How to Spend a Week in Christchuroh," would be. placed on board the ferry steamers, also on the passenger counter at the ; Wellington office. j I The letter was acknowledged with i thanks.
