JAPANESE FAIR.

The Japanese fair, organised by tho ladies, of at. Peter's, iiiocarton, was opened yesterday aftornoon on the vicarago grounds. ''J iio numerous stails were all tastefully arranged and decorated, and the biignt Japanese costumes worn by tho ladies "gavo the grounds a gay and animated appearunce, whicii would have been considerably enhanced, had tho weather been mora piopuaous. Tho fair was formally declared open by bir <Jnaries Bo\v/un, who in a snort speech expressed his pieasuro at being present, and his hopes tor tho success of tho bazaar, tho oojoct of which was the extinction of tho church debt. Former fetes held by the church hart been thoroughly successful, as -ho himself remembered, and ho was sure that tho presfent one would prove no exception.

I>uring tho afternoon and evening tho fair was* well attended, musical selections being provided by l>erry's Band. Among tho entertainments provided for tho amusement' of the visitors, were a number of well performed dances and choruses, under the direction of Mesdames Williams and Freeman, and a scene from "The Geisha," acted by a number of young ladies.

The various stalls were presided over as follows:—Flower Stall: Mesdamee Yorke and Mitchell and Misses JMilnes and Mullaney; Sixpenny Stall: Mrs and Miss Lucas; Parcel Stall: Miss Freeman ; Sweet Stall: Mesdames Morton and W. D. Stewart and Misses Morton and Cotton; Sewing Stall: Mesdames English and JlcKay; Palm Stall: Mesdames Jones and Smith: Industries Stall: Mrs Anderson and Misses Muir, Jackson and Haye; Produce Stall: Mesdames Kirkwood and Beckett and Misses Bowen, Brake and Maude; Fancy Stall: Mrs W. Clarkson and Miss Caygill; Afternoon Tea v-aa dispensed by alesdames Ward, Thomson, 13 aye. Brako, Hayton and Carleton and Miss Thomson, while tho kitchen was in charge of Mrs-Freeman and Miss Budge. An ice cream stall was presided over by Mrs Gunderson and Miss Edwards, and a bran tub by Miss Wilson. A shooting competition and Aunt Sally were under tho direction of Messrs Hanson and Forsyth, and a cake competition was conducted by Misses Kincaid and Shipley. Tho fair will be open again this afternoon and evening.
