HALSWELL.

Tho monthly meeting of tho Halswell County Council was held on Tuesday. Present—Messrs J. Gilmour (chairman), Murphy, W. Gilmour, W Former, and H. liaglesomo. Correspondence was read trom tho Bon. R. Heaton Rhodes regarding Justices of the Peace in tho district. Tho clerk to reply. From the Waihi Borough Council, forwarding resolution re employees. Receive* l . From Cashmere Estate, in reference to cleaning Cashmere etream from Parlane's bridge to tho boundary of tho county. It was resolved that the trustees bo informed tho Council will remit the separate rate on tho trustees' land through which tho strcac* runs provided the stream is cleaned by the Cashmero Estate. From Technical College, asking for a donation to tho building fund of the Girls' Hostel. Received. From the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, stating that tho Council's application to havo reserve 3520 sold and tho proceeds invested in a recreation ground for,, tho district had been included in a Bill before Parliament. Received.

GEKALDINK

Tho annual meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held on Tuesday, I when the chairman for the " : ensuing yea' «vas elected. Present—Messrs G. J. Dennistoun (chairman), K. Mackenzie, F. It. Flatuian, P. Mulvihill, D. Grant, G. W. Armitago, and J. T. M. Hayhurst. The Chairman stated that their bank book showed thr sum ot £1300 standing to their credit. Fully £GOO had yet to come in for rates, so that in round figures they would have a balance of £2000. He thanked tho members for the courteous and considerate way they had treated 3iim during the past year. They had all worked pleasantly together, anti done their best to further the interests of tho ratepayers. Mr Hayhurst ' proposed that Mr Dennietoun be re-elected.. Ho had given general satisfaction, and done well for the district. Mr Arirnt»»ge, m seconding the proposal, endorsed tho remarks of Mr Hayhurst. Tho Chairman had been fair and just to all in conducting the Council* business. Mr Dennistoun was unanimously re-elected, and thanked the members for tho honour done him. Messrs Mackenzie and Grant were elected to represent the Council on the Board of the Timaru High School.

MALVERN,

At tho monthly meeting of tho Malvern County Council the following tenders tor metalling were accepted: — Contracts Nos. 1, o and 6, J. Hart, Is 10d per yard; No. 4, J. Hart, 2s; Nos. 2 and 9, l>. Henry, 2s; Nos. 3, 7, and 8, l>. Henry, Is 10d; stone-breakiug contracts. No. 1, J. Walker, -is 6d per chain; No. 2, J. Walker, 3s 3d. No. 3, A. E. Warren, 3s 3d; No. 5, It. Broomneld, Is Bd. The I>arfie:d School Committee applied for the use of land adjoining the school for tho purpose of agricultural education. This was granted, tho Council being in sympathy with tho movement. Reports were received from the water-race caretakers giving -tho names of persons polluting the water-races. Prompt action is to bo taken if this is not discontinued. The County Overseer's report was considered, and decision:, i-ome to as under:—The newly-tnetalled roads to be blinded and rolled as soon as conditions aro suitable; protective works to bo continued at the Kowai intake when tho state of tho river allows; repairs to the Greendale footbridge and tho Hawkins bridgo at Sheffield to be proceeded with as soon as pp?sible. Owing to tho Christmas holidays, ifc was decided to hold the next meeting on January 7th u>l3 and to call tenders for that meeting for cocksfoot cutting on tho roads waterraces and Wadnington cemetery It was decided that all owners of unro-

gistored dog 9be cued next Court day, and that 10 per cent, oo added to all outstanding rates and water-charges, on December 31st. 1912. .Tho half-yearly balanco sheet was laid on the table, tho amount of outstanding rates and wate--charges being considered the only unsatisfactory feature.
