Th© secretary of the Now Zealand Federation of Drivers , Unions (Mr Hiram Hunter) has received tho following letter from tho Prime Minister (tho Hon. W. F. Massey):— "In farther reply to your letter of tho 2nd lust., protesting against .the decision ■of tho Arbitration Court in respect to tho wages of drivers under tho recent award, I understand that tho dosiro of your Federation is that, 38 tho Court oE Arbitration has awarded only £2 8s per week for one hor&e drivers, a minimum wage of Is p« hour should be fixed by legislation. ( It should, of course, be understood, that the rates fixed by tho Court are j merely minimum rates of employment, ■ and any employee is at liberty to stipulate with his employer that ho be ■ paid a higher wage. I understand further that the rate awarded in th* award you refer to, namely, £2 8s ra* • one-horso drivers, is 4s per week more than that fixed in tho jirevious Cant* , !* , bnry award, dated December 18th, ■ 11008. Your suggestion opens up a difficult question, inasmuch as to carry tho same into effect would nocessitato interference with the discretion o£ tho Court of Arbitration, which is a tribunal specially set up to deal with industrial matters. -The jruggratjon will, however, bo carefully considered during tho present recess, wael l "o j Conciliation and Arbitration Act « J being reviewed generally.
