MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
In tho V.M.C.A. Hall last evening, Mr C. H. o>pie gave an educational matters, being occupied by the Mayor, Mr H. Holland. Mr Opie made a strong plea for the extension of the democratic system of government—by echool committees. The previous Government had intended to eliminate the school committee scheme, and he hoped tho present Government would not do so. Primary education in New Zealand, he said, was ahead of the system in England, hut in the matter of technical education they, in New Zealand, were far behind. fie praised _tho newlyinaugurated system of medical inspection in New Zealand, and advocated the extension of the continuation school system. Tho monthly meeting of the Christchurch Prison Gate Mission was held at the V.M.C.A. yesterday afternoon.' The Rev. Canon Coates presided. \ Tho visitors' reports were read / and other matters of interest to tho mission were discussed.
