CATTLE.

SHORTHOR_NS.

The catalogue included 93 Shorthorns, 49 Jerseys, 34 Ayrshires, and Red Polled and fat cattle filled the remainder of the stalls. A kind winter for tbe most part allowed tho cattlo to come forward in excellent condition, and all tho leading. Canterbury herds were represented. The fact that few, if any, .ontries came from the North Island or from tho Southern districts would indicate that there is, besides prime Canterbury mutton, some degree of excellence in its cattlo which defies competition. In tho class for bulls of any ago, there was tho samo number of entries as last year- -fou r~and it contained tho following medallists: —White King, of two yoars ago; Monarch, which took the honour last year; and Riccarton Duke of Kirkstyle, tho reserved champion of 1909, and which at eight ■v-cars was the oldest in the class. Mr Chamberlain's Monarch, by Ambush, which has developed into a magnificent heavy bull, with strong head features, well-fleshed all over, and clothed with a good mantle of red, white and roan,-was placed first, And, afterwards, out of the eligible four bulls, was awarded the reserved champion ticket. Mr D. G. Wright's. White King, by Woolmer's King, which was very highly commended last year, came second, and is a lengthy and massive bull, with much to command attention. The Riccarton Estate's Riccarton Dnke ;of Kirkstyle, reserved for the championship in 1909, was very highly commended, and Barker Bros.'. Devondale Duke, bred by Mr J. A. Scott, a three-year-old, was justly commended. The threo-ycar-old bulls not represented a year since, formed a creditable quartet, and were well brought out, Tho judges probably had no an awarding the first prize to tho Canterbury Agricultural College _»««» Broadhook's Stamp, bred by Rt. Hoa. F Wrench, Ballybrack, Dublin, and, subsequently, in its selection witn ■ Monarch and the first and second.two-year-old bulls, for the silver medal. As a two-year-old, Broadhopks Stamp is 'well brought .out, although on the ! small side in his company, his, contour ' and rich dark colour betokened a. good constitution, and his level, broad back; with a gaiety in carriage, indicates a aseful career. Besides first prize and medal for championship, this bull took Mr John Dean's Memorial Challenge Cup, instituted ton years a&, tho previous holders bemg:-In ™\™ r A. Tho two-year-old bulls class presented a good deal of quality. Messrs W. Sccon and A. Chamberlain had two exhibits each, and D. G. Wright, W. Chamberlain, and Jos. Brooks single entries. The first and second prize-takers were Mr A. Chamberlain's Charming Count and Charming Count 21st, both bred by the exhibitor. The former had a very fine head and well developed body and forearm. "Mr W. Chamberlain's Dixko was thiis; Mr W. Scoon's Wil.o-v Bank Prido v.h.c.; Mr J. Brooks's iStrowan Laddie h.c.; and Mr I>. G. Wright's exhibit c. The class throughcut was a very fine one in tho opinion of tho judges. Always a popular class in which young-bulls aro first brought out, and when pretty correct opinions may then bo formed of their future, the yearlings paraded twenty-one strong, keeping up last year's reputation, when fifteen entered tho arena of the seventeen entries. Mr Scoon presented three by Waterloo Pride, J. A. Scott two, A. Chamberlain, R. Peach, W. B. Cunningham. Riccarton Estate, and Canterbury College each two, while W. Chamberlain, Barker Bros., and Sunnysido Mental Hospital wero content "with ono entry. The class was considered to bo a good test for the young farmers, and they took it in hand, after which tho judges gave their awards, placing Mr A. Chamberlain's Monarch 3rd, a very promising oxhibit, first, Riccarton Blithe oth second, and Blithe 6th h.c. Mr W. Scoon's Pride of Bclgrovc being third, Canterbury Agricultural College v.h.c, and Sunnysido Mental Hospitalc. The younger Shorthorn bulls, calved since November, 1911, were seven, one over tho previous year, and here Mr Wm. Chamberlain won with about tha youngest, a Prince Charming. Mr A. Chamoorlain was second, with on© of twins, and Mr D. G. Wright third, with a descendant of White King.

There was a very fine show of cows, or heifers in profit, Messrs Chamberlain, C. M. Thrclkeld, Hight Bros., Riccarton Estate, and Canterbury Agriculture College vicing with each other for the coveted ticket. The only previous prize-taker present was tho College cow Lincoln Moffatt 4th, which,, after being in the prize lists for two years, became champion at last show, but yesterday it had to suffer displacement to reserved champion. Mr C. M. Threlkeld's Inglewood Pink, ! by Inglewood Pink's Earl, bred by the exhibitor, a cow of excellent proportions, and a* matronly model of the Shorthorn dairy oow, took tho first and silver medal, whilo Inglewood Verbena, from tho samo Lord, was v.h.c. Canterbury Agricultural College's exhibit, Lincoln Moffatt 4th, by Riby of Beaulieu, which has in the past three shows been a most noticeable exhibit, was awarded second and reserved champion tickets. Mr A. Chamberlain's Pansy 4th was third, Riccarton Estate's Flower of Brunswick 38th h.c, and Mr W. Chamberlain's Princess Ena c, exhausted the tickets, but the other exhibits of the class were in every way most commendable. When tho eligible five cows or heifers for the championsh'p—the exhibits cf Messrs Threlkeld (two), A. Chamberlain (three), and tho College—were lined up. they won general admiration from the crowd of interested onlookers.

Tho following were the winners of the championships for Shorthorn cows eince 190*3: "• ■- ' ' - - 1902—-Mr A. There were five three-year-old heifers, all of which formed an attractive class. ■Mr A. Chamberlain's Rosebud 3rd, a previous winner as a yearling and two-year-old, was placed first, Sunnysido Mental Hospital's Attractive Princess 3rd second, and Canterbury Agricultural College commended.

The two-year-old heifers formed a class as strong as tho last, namely, fivo exhibits, and each of them showed a wealth of quality and breeding. "Mr Threlkeld won first prize with Inglewood Daisy 40th, a prize winner as a December calf last year, and, with a yearling prize taker of tho previous show, was commended. Hight Bros., with a promising heifer by Lord of the Isles, were second, and Mr D. G. Wright's exhibit was highly commended. Tho seven yearling heifers did credit to the show, and wero well brought out in every way. Mr A. Chamberlain's exhibit, by Monarch, was first. Mr W, B. Cunningham's, by Lord of tne Isles, second, ana Riccarton Estate, by Duke of Kirkstyle, was very highly commended. _ The remaihingexhibits of the College and Mental Hospital, two each, were out-matched by their company. Five young heifers calved since November Ist of last year made a good finish to tho regular classes of the female young stock. Here Mr A. Chamberlain was not to be denied first for a Monarch calf, and Riccarton Estate scored with Blithe 39th, and tho College were commended for a descendant of Devonvalo Count.

In bulls with three of their progeny, fivo entries were made, and the display was one of the finest ever here seen. Out of the large number of his entries, •Mr A. Chamberlain drew Monarch and his progeny, and was successful in winning the first prizo; the second ticket being presented to the Riccarton Estate exhibit, Riccarton Duke of Kirkstyle. Messrs Scott and Wright and the Mental Hospital exhibits wero miJst meritorious in their character. A trio of cows with two of their progeny attracted considerable- attention from the onlookers. . Mr A. Chamberlain was expected to prove the largest prize-taker in the Shorthorn section of tho show. In the class for pairs of yearling heifers, four owners competed with well-fleshed exhibits. The characters of tho first prizo pair wero marked with all the points of the Shorthorn and of the stud farm upon which they had been bred.
