MIDWIVES FOR THE BACK BLOCKS.
(special to "the ritEss"" 1 . WELLINGTON, October 30. In tho House of Representatives this afternoon, replying to Mr Stattoam, tho Minister of Public Health said tho question of encouraging midwives to practise in the back-block* had been tho subject of considerable discussion on tho part of tho Department, and tho Hospital Boards had advised that free training would bo given in St._ Helens Hospitals to those women specially recommended by the Boards ns likely to make suitable midwives, provided they engaged ou completion of l*he ; r training, to serve for a stated period in the more remote country districts. "It is considered," added the Minister, ''that this policy is a better one than to insist on six months extension of tho period of training for midwivos, which is now for icgist-ercd nurses six mouths, and for unregistered nurses twelve months. If an additional six months' course were insisted upon, it might have the effect of deterring many excellent women, trained or untrained, from undertaking tho work, nnd thus might result in n shortage of midwives for/the Dominion."
