(PRESS AS3OCIATIOX TELEGRAM.)

WELLINGTON, July 16. . • The continued denudation of the bush on the hillsides adjoining the Wanganui river, led to a huge landslide on Sunday, just below At«ne. The earth on one hillside was soaked -with ram without any bush to hold it, dipped ' into the river, and piled up in the ■ water to such an extend that it [reached more than halfway across. It •was at first thought that the obstruction -would block the steamer service, but the fear was groundless, though great care lias to be exercised in making the. passage through the narrow lane of ewift running water. Fortunately, the river has alrendy commenced to scour away the ob-truction, and it is unlikely that it will bo permanent. , A large number of slips are reported on the hillsides in the back country. The roads are in a terrible state, the Ahuaahua road in particular, many 6ections having slipped away.
