MISS COWAN'S READINGS.

The first of Miss Lucy Cowan's schemo of readings was held last evening, when Miss Cowan explained that as it was the first it was but an incomplete thing, and somewhat unbalanced. Nevertheless it covered much ground. Miss Muriel Brewen's said "The Old Clock on the Stairs," and spoke of Tennyson's "Elaine." Miss Cowan's items were Longfellow's "Spanish Proverb" and "It is Not i Always May." She also gave Sidney Paton's "Farewell to the World" ' and Tennyson's "Lady of Shalott.' Mr Frank Cordery recited Browning's "Evelyn Hope," Mrs Blackmore sang "Shadows," and -Mr Salkeld "The Irish Emigrant," and "The Village Blacksmith." The accompaniments were played by Miss Campion with considerable skill. It is Miss Cowans intention to hold these entertainments weekly on each Monday night.
