AUCKLAND DRIVERS AND THE WAIHI STRIKE FUND.
(POJCU ASSOCIATION TELXGEAM.)
. AUCKLAND,!'. Jtiiy 14. ■ A most unusual' position' has- arisen in connection with - tho ■ Auckland Drivers' Union and a levy to assist the Waihi strikers. , a special meeting of: tho union was held, and a deputation from 'the Waihi Miners' Union was received. Tho ' deputation put forth arguments in favour of a levy being made towards the Waihi striko fund."Two propositions were then placed before the meeting-—one that a levy of 2s per week'should bo made, and the other that instead of a levy being made'the sum of £60 should bo paid outright "to the"; Waihi. Union striko fund. Tho idea of a levy met with small support, and eventually a majority of the members at th© meeting decided in favour of, donating a sum of £60. Later'on. conrplications arose, and tho committee of tho Drivers' Union decided; _; by', six votes to four, to veto the decision of tlio union, putting forth as tho reason that it was.not definitely known whether tho members could really vote £60 out of the funds. Legal advice has since been obtained by the: committee, and they find that the members were quite within their legal rights in voting a lump sum of £GO. The position now is that a special meeting of the union will be hold this week to finally decide as to what assistance, if any, they will give to the Waihi strikers.
