INTERPROVINCIAL HOCKEY MATCH.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE ,I'RESS." Sir, —In ■ this _ morning's paper is printed an extract from your paper in regard to tho Wellington-Canterbury hockey match, and particularly to what is now known as "tho Campbell incident,"
Your contributor must havo been either carried away by Canterbury's win. or else, ho could net have seen the incident. I happened to be in a position from which I saw tho incident very ' clearly. The referee did not penalise Campbell, because he had committed no breach, ■ but in cautioning Throp. instead of ordering him off the field, ho made a mistnko which has done hockey in Wellington a considerable amount of harm. I-think .Throp himself will admit that ho.lost, his head in tho heat of tho moment, but it is such actions as this, which if they are allowed to go unchecked, will bring hockey into disrepute. As to the referee, he refcreed with consriicilous ■ success in, most. of. last year's matches. .• \ '
As regards .thftjresult of tho game, 1 will net'go further than to say that Canterbury dcj"»rvod their win on • the day's pli'v. although thnv cannot be congratulated, on their tactics, which wp'*o questionable in the extreme. Trusting , you will pivo tlris letter publicity, a* that both sides of the nuestion will go before tho public.— Yours, etc., SPORT.' Wellington. July 2nd..', ,
