MINING.

WEST COAST NOTES. (special to "the press"). GI'EYMOTJTH. April 11. Since the boring operations of the Shell Company ceased at Kotuku, owing to tho striking of tho bed rock, nothing baa been heard from that quarter, but quite recently the men. who had been practically unemployed since boring operations ceased, wero set to work to remove tho machinery and erect tho derrick closo to one of the old bores, where oil was formerly found.

After all the efforts that were made to prospect and open up tho reefs at Wilson's Rewarrt, between Hc-kitika and Canterbury, all work has ceased, with the view of organan entirely new basis. The weather interfered a good deal with the operations, and there teemed to be no immediate prospect of any gold be:ng obtained. It is uncertain when operations aro likely to be resumed.

The old Victory quartz claim at Lyoll has lately been taken up by a small syndicate of Christchurch ar.d Greymouth men. They commenced operations in an old, abandoned tunnel and commenced following up what seemed to be an ordinary quartz leader a few inches thick. This increased steadily as it was followed, and has developed into a well-defined auriferous reef. 3ft thick, that assays *n ounce to the ton. Tho manager (Mr Jeffries) has in the meantime* left for Canterbury to consult with the shareholders there in respect to future operations.

The Charleston mica mine shinped a further thirty-fire cwt. of mica to Efn.land yesterday.
