TRIBUTE TO SIR JAMES ROSS.
AMUNDSEN NOT CERTAIN OF VICTORY.
HOBART, March 19. Captain Amundsen, speaking at the Royal Society, said he considered that Sir James Ross held first place as an Arctic and Antarctic explorer. Referring to the South Pole, ho stated that it would be better to wait before he was credited with being tho first to reach it. Captain Scott might havo another story to tell. If Captain Scott did not actually reach the Pole, ho was sure to return with good results.
