CHARGE OF ASSAULT.
(rBESS ASSOCIATION TELECIiAM.) AUCKLAND, March IC. At the Police Court to-day Bernard. Hilton Miss was committed for trial on a charge of having assaulted Mrs Maria New, and causing her actual bodily harm. Detective Marsack, in opening the case against the accused, said that for some time past cases of women being knocked down by a mysterious assailant in the vicinity of Epsom and Komuera, had been reported to dio police. In each case a single blow had been given, and no attempt had l(*en made to rob or otherwise interfere arith the women. In every other instance but the present one the assailant lad escaped without being recognised. Tn the present case, however, Mrs Is'ew saw the person who assaulted her, and identified him as the accused.
Mrs New, in her evidence, stated that when she was proceeding home, about 11 p.m., the accused followed her. As she "was crossing the road to her house accused struck her. She became unconscious, and when she recovered was lying on the road with four teeth broken. She saw accused running off. She had money and jewellery on her, but was not robbed, and nothing ivas done to her except the blow. The accused, who pleaded not guilty, was allowed bail, in two sureties of £75 each.
