ST. PATRICK'S DAY.
CELEBRATION IN WELLINGTON. (rRESS ASSOCIATION TKLEGBAM.) WELLINGTON, March 17. St. Patrick's Day was celebrated yesterday by a procession and sports in Nowtovvn Park. Tho weather was perfect. Jla'ss was said at nine o'clock, Dean Itegnault preaching a sermon appropriate to tho occasion. At tho conclusion of the service a procession was formed, headed by Jupp's Band and assisted by tho Cadet Drum and Fife Band. Among thoso who marched wore tho St. Patricks College Cadets, the diarist Brothers Cadets, the Hibernian Society and the Catholic Club. A feature of the procession was an Irish jaunting car, iv which was seated Mr 31. Bohan, "Father" of tho H.A.C. 8.5., who founded tho Wellington branch in 1874. Among thoso present at tho sports yesterday were Archj bishop Redwood, Archdeacon • 3>evoy, Dean ltognault, Father O'Shea (Vicar General). Dr. Kennedy (Rector of St. Patrick's College), Sir Joseph and Lady Ward. Miss Eileen Ward and Sir James Carroll. A programme of sports was gone through, including a- display of club and dumb-bell exercises by the pupils of the iSicred Heart Convent. St. Patrick's Day will be observed today. The holiday will not. however, be. a general one though the banks and most of tho Government ofßcos will be closed. Practically tho only celebration of the day locally of a national character is* the entertainment to be given in tho Theatre Iloyal to-night. Iγ. addition the various moving picture entertainments will he given. .Sports will be held at Gcr.ildinc. It is anticipated that a large number of Christchurch people will accept the invitation extended by the Mayor, councillors and peonle of Tiinani to visit the South Canterbury seaport today. Tho occasion is intended to brinr; under tho notice of the Christchurch people the attractions of Timaru. An excursion train will leavo Christchurch for Timaru at 8.5 a.m.. and is timed to reach Timaru at 11.40 a.m. It is to ; leave Timaru at 5 p.m. and is to arrive < at Christcburch at 8.50 p.m. Specially reduced fares will be charged on tins excursion train.
