THE MAYORALTY.

♦ CR. HOLLAND ASKED TO STAXD. With tho near approach of tho Mayoral election, interest in tho contest is beginning to awaken, though it is not probable that this year's election will create the excitement that was manifested at tho last contest. It is I understood that Mr J. J. Dougall, tho * present Mayor, will seek re-election, I and it will be remembered that Dr. Thacker stated on the night of the ' second ballot of the general elections, i that ho would again contest the Mayori aliy. It was suited that Mr T. J. 1 Mcßrido would stand this year on be- ; half of the Labour Party, but it is I now understood that he will not fx2ek the suffrages of the electors. Another probable candidate is Cγ. 11. U. Holland. Yesterday afternoon a deputation : representing tho unorganised workers and electors of Christchureh. waited on Cr. Holland. The deputation, which was introduced by Mr Marshall, asked Cr. Holland to allow himself to bo nominated for the position of Mayor ;of the city. A numerously signed requisition, signed by all classes of the 1 community, was presented, requesting Mr Holland to consent to nomination. Mr Holland thanked the deputation for honouring him with such a request; it was an honour he had never nought. He had honestly tried to do what he believed was his duty to tho. citizens as a whole, and it was extremely pratityinp to him to know thnt his efforts had met with such appreciation. Ho would give tho requisition his careful consideration, and lot the deputation , have his decision as early as possible.
