TRENTHAM RIFLE MEETING.

A MISERABLE DAY. TENTS BLOWN DOWN. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEORAiIS.) TRENTHAM. March 3. Yesterday was the worst day experienced on the Trentham range for years. Shortly after daybreak rain started to fall, and by 8 o'clock it had settled into a steady downpour. The first matphes taken wero snap-shGoting at 300 yards, and moving target at 300 yards. The weather conditions did no; appear to damp the ardour of the competitors, but many of them who looked with contempt upon this portion of the programme, did not do justice to it in their shooting. In the snap-shooting, although no sighters were allowed, many of tho men got on to tho target at onccv Law (Dannevirke) made no mistake; he struck the bull with each shot, getting tho possible. In tho moving target match, which was taken at the same time, the competitors had to fire at a head and shoulders' target, which was exposed seven times for four seconds each, exposure being made at different parts of the butts. Each hit counted four points. _"*Ls showing tho merit of the shooting, there were nine possibles. During the firing of this match, Gunner Watkins, of tho Permanent Artillery, wns* struck on tho shoulder by a broken nickel shell, caused by a ricochet. First aid was rendered by Captain Merrilees, nnd the man was able to walk to Dr. Kemp, who was telephoned for from the city. This is the f,r»t mishap to a marker during tho existence of the Association. In the afternoon, the attack match, which comprised an attack on a position at 4CO, 300 and 200 yards, was commenced. There was still a steady downpour of rain winch had continued without intermission from the morning. Thc shooting all round, considering the conditions, was very good. The storm continued during tho night, intermittent gusts of wind driving heavy rain hard against tho tents. Although there was a certain amount of discomfort, it was not until fc o'clock this morning that any of tho canvas structures were demolished. An extra heavy gust struck tho camp, and in a minute or two Colonel Collins's headquarters' marquee was lying on tho ground, while in another corner three or four tents had collapsed. The Press marquee and the Karori Rifle Club's marquee were also blown down. Captain Sandle quickly had a squad of Permanent Artillerymen at work, and tho marquees wero reerected. To-morrow morning tho Belt series, in which the Ballinger Championship Belt forms tho principal trophy, will bo commenced. The following is the prize list: — SERVICE BATCHES— SNAP SHOOTING, 6 rounds.
