A RIVAL TEAM.
I — --PUBLIC MEETING CALLED.MELBOURNE, February , 27. A public meeting has been called for Thursday to discuss the action of the Board of Control with regard to the team for England, and to consider a motion asking the Marylebone Cricket Club to receive a team chosen by Hill, Trumper, and Armstrong. A. movement to send a team to England independently of the Board of Control was started in Melbourne a couple of days ago, and in a few days £925 was raised (mostly in large sums), towards the expenses. The "Argus" makes the- following comment on the. proposal: —"We give publicity to the letters we have received in support of a proposal to send a team to England independently of the Board of Control for the sake of the emphatic testimony they bear to the existence of strong public discontent. At the same time, it must be pointed out that, unless the board fails to dispatch a team of its own, an independent team would scarcely find an opening. The arrangements for the coming season's play in England are probably already settled, or soon will be, and the counties, which attach great importance to intercounty play, could, not be expected to make room for two sets of international matches."
