MR J. R. MACKENZIE'S PURCHASES. (FRO- o*D*B OWN CORK-3PONDEST). LONDON, January 19. Mr J. R. Mackenzie, Romney Downs, "Dunedin, has purchased a number of well-bred Clydesdales,,which will be shipped this month for New Zealand. From Mr J.* Kilpatrick, Craigie Mains, he has- bought the noted big, good-breeding horse, Auehencruive (1*4573), which was fourth at tho H. and A.S. when a two-year-old, the Dnni blano, Doune, and Callander premium when a three-year-old, the Dalbeattie premium when a four-year-old, and the Howo o" the premium in Kincardineshire when a five-year-old. Auchcncruive was bred by 'Mr Young, _'ulshaw Wood, Ayr, and Mas got by the big, strong, good-legged- horse Lancer (12205) ont of a mare by the noted Prince of Wales horse St. Blaise (3987). He was excellent breeding in the earlier crosses, being .descended from the famous Time o' Day (875), which won the Glasgow premium twico in succession, and was first both at the Glasgow Stallion Show and the IT. and A.S. at Glasgow in 1875. He was sold at a vory high price to go to Australia. ' From Mr James Picken, Torra, Kirkcudbright, Mr Macken_io bought the three-year-ol 1 General Douglas (11'58_1. by the well-bred big horse in Cumberland, Douglas Chief, while his dam was by that excellent breeding-horse Speciality. From Messrs A. and W. Montgomery, Netherhall, and Banks, Kirkcudbright. Mr Mackenzie had twelve head, including seven three-year-olds and four four-year-olds. The three-year-olds are _"• bunch of big draught colts, with good feet and broad, flat bones. They arc well bred, and bred for siw and quality, as the following notes will show: —
One, named Barony, is by the noted premium horse Majestic Baron (13617); another is by tho exceptionally promising breeding horse Mamilms (142C4) out of a mare by the noted Top Knot (63G0). Tho successful price horse Marmion (11429) is sire of one out of a niaro by the Royal Gartly horse Mazawattee (10817), gr.-dam by tho big prize horse Knight o , Cowal (10074). Another is by the. powerful, wellcoloured big horse Enigma (10739) out ot' a maro by that first-class horse Orlando (8092), which was first at Glasgow Stallion Show when a throe-year-old ; and the others are by the Cawdor Cup champion Memento (13100). the Glasgow premium borse Ganymede (14130). and the unbeaten champion horse Everlasting (11331). Among the older horses arc four-year-olds by the well-known Aberdeen prize horse Pnnce of Craigwillie (11642), out of a mare by the prize horse Carabineer (10522); the celebrated champion Hiawatha (10057) ont of the fine breeding mare Fickle Fortune Princess (13901), the H and. A.6. champion horse Benedict (10315), and the big, good-breeding horse Ardlethen Goldsmith (11588).
