PICNICS.

Due partly to the fact that there wero very few vessels in. port, but chiefly because of tho absence of the waterside* workers, who were holding their annual picnic, the waterfront at Lytteltcn wore a very deserted and quiet appearance yesterday. A long special -train, carrying several hundreds of. the waterside- workers and their wives, children and friends left Lyttelton shortly before 9 a.m. for Rangiora. Stops were mado at wayside ettions to pick up several hundreds of people, and the great party of picnicker* numbered about 1000 when the train left Christchurch. A very enjoyable outing was spent in the Rangiora Domain, the day being beautifully fine. The principal competitions resulted as follows:—Mother of largest family, Mrs Ringdon and Mrs J. The annual picnic of .the Richmond Public School was held at Pearson Park, Oxford, on Friday, over 500 children and friends availing themselves of the outing.
