* . SOUTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION'S MEETING. The eighth annual meeting of the South Island l—flo Association, which opened on Saturday, was concluded at. Redcliffs yesterday. The weather was fine, but a strong easterly winu handicapped the competitors, who had to watch it very carefully, and despite all precautions a sudden gust would have a bad effect at the critical moment. Despite this, however, very fair scores were put up. In tho morninir tho Westland and Southland Matches were decided, and in tho afternoon the Champion Teams' and King's Hatches. Tho King's Match, the principal event of the day, carrying with it the South Island Rifle Championship, was won by Captain W. S. King; the Southland Match was won by Rifleman E. F. Sandford; the Westland jfatch by Captain W. S. King; and the Champion Teams' Match by Christchurch Rifle Defence Club No. 1 team, consisting of Riflemen Duffy, Sandford, Wood, Eiby, and Reynolds. By their win they Eecured the Watkin*on ChaJlcngo Shield. Rifleman Hogg won Stewort Dawson and Co.'s trophy for the highest score in the final stage of th? King's Match after having to fire off with four or five others for tho last placo in the aggregate*. Rifleman Eiby won tho cup presented by the late Mr Geo. G. Stead, to the highest tyro in the Canterbury, Otsgo, Westland, nnd Southland matches. Private Menzies won tho cup presented by the late Mr Geo. G. Stead'to tho highest competitor under twentyone years of age in tie Canterbury, Otago, Westland, and Southland matches. Rifleman Eiby also won the "Canterbury Timos" prize for the best tyro aggregate. Captin W. S. King (Linwood), with sf score of 169, won the trophy presented by Lieu-tenant-Colonel R. Hcaton Rhodes, M.P., for tho highest aggregate *t the longest range* in the Canterbury, Otago. Westland aud Southland Matches. Rifleman Reyno'.d* (Christchurch Defence Rifle , Club), with a score of 140, won the cup presented by Lieutenant-Colonel Smith for the highest competitor in the Canterbury and We3t.and Matches. Sergeant Nicholl won Coates and Co.'s trophy for the best aggregate at th* 600 yds, and Bombardier Holmshaw (Lyttelton) the Kaiapoi Woollen Co.'s prite for the best individual aggregate in the Champion Teams' Match, his score being 102, maao up as follows:—33, 35, 34. During the - afternoon Colonel Day presented tho trophies and prizes won. Following are the results: — WESTLAND MATCH. ' The Westland Match, of 500 yds, ten shots, was fired in a good light, when the wind wa* not so bad. Tho shooting waa quite up to the usual standard. The King's Match, tho principal event of tho day, commenced shortly after lunch. It was open to the twenty-four highest aggregate scorer* in tho Canterbury, Otago, Westland, and Southland matches, each competitor firing 10 shot* at 900 yds, the scores made at this range to be added to the aggregate of the four above mentioned matches, the winner to hold the South Island Championship Belt (presented by tho Licensed Victuallers' Association, Christchurch) for one year. The annual general meeting of the South Island Rifle Asaociaton was.held yesterday afternoon, Captain King presiding, when tho whole of last year's executive, with the exception of Major Aschman, were re-elected. Captain Burnett takes Major Aschman's place. Christchurch was fixed as the locale of next yoar's Meeting.
