, I THE TRANS-CONTINENTAL RAILWAY. A HUGE UNDERTAKING United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, February 24. As the first practical step towards the construction of the Trans-Conti-nental Railway, the Federal Government is calling tenders for 13o,(jOO tons of steel rails. The Hon. K. O'Malley, Minister of Home Affairs, claims that it will be the biggest railway job in tho world, and will cover 1063 miles. The work will be carried out by day labour, and 1800 men will be required. Asked what preference could be extended to English manufacturers, Mr O'Malley said that outside Australia, tenders would be called for only in England. This statement should indicate the Government's intention.
