THE HAYNES CASE.
— 1 The promise made by the Prime Minister that the Haynes case would be fully considered by Cabinet after tho elections has not yet been fulfilled. The girl Eileen Haynes has not been returned to,her adoptive parents, and Mr and Mrs Haynes have not yet received any intimation that their claim for justico has been dealt with/ The matter was once more brought under the direct notice of the Prime Minister yesterday. I The following telegram was addressed v to the Prime Minister, at Warner's Hotel,'by Mr A. Goring:—"Have waited patiently for twelve months for a settlement. It seems that there is no justice for the workers. Will you give us something definite?" A rather remarkable point about the Department's # attitudo towards , the Haynes case is that during the past five months Mr Haynes has not Been called upon to make the weekly payments which were ordered by the Stipendiary Magistrate who originally removed- the child from his custody—Mr H. W. Bishop. Mr Haynes has declined to continue the payments, and the Education Department has taken no steps to enforco, them. Mr Haynes said that his refusal to pay was dictated by his desire to have the case finally dealt with. He wanted the child back, and wished to know when the Department, which had had the case under consideration for twelve months, was going to act. He did not grudge the maintenance money. In fact, he was quite willing, when he received back the girl, to hand over to a charitable institution the amount of the arrears. He was determined, however, to resist to the utmost the order which had been unjustly made against j him. Tho Acting-Minister for Education is the Hon. T. Mackenzie. j
