Until rain actually stopped play late in tho afternoon, tho conditions for match play wero perfect at Haglcy yesterday, and another most interesting day's croquet was tho result. Division B of. the Championship j Singles was won by H. J. Williams (Sumner), but Miss Parsons made a thoroughly good fight of it, and is certain io do well in future tournaments. Chambers fought his way into the Championship final by victories over Macfarlano and Clark. Clark made a very good match of his game, and at one time looked as though he would got round and peg out Chambors'a rover ball. Considering how ho has toiled keeping nine courtsgoing, ho played remarkably .well against a most formidable opponent. Murray--Aynsiey had en excellent match with Joynt, who from playing in the tournament has nt iV.st struck form, r.nd qualified for tho semifinal. Butterworth also qualified by victories over Johnson and MTa Pinckney. The -Casting's lady delighted her audience with a succession of long roquets, but a fluke shot lot her opponent in, who was enabled U> peg out her yellow ball. Three- excellent rr-atchej wero played in tho Ladies' Singles. Mrs Crawford nearly ran out before Mr 3 Murray-Aynsiey started. She pot in on a Icng shot, went Tight round, and pegged out Mrs Crawford's rover ball. But in the threeball pame that followed Mrs Crawford, who only wanted tho rover hoop, got in, and won the match. Mrs Will just defeated by excellent croquet Miss Smith. The score was exactly even, when Miss Smith just ran oil tho boundary, and Mrs Will finished the match withoiit giving her another chance. Miss Buddo's gamo against Miss Gossot w-as just as good croquet, Miss Buddo getting heme. Sho and Mrs Will havo to fight out tho semi-final, ns does' Miss Rutherford against Mrs Crawford. If anyone can name tho winners of these four ladies ho would easily make his fortune as a prophet. In the Club Pairs the steady, consistent play of Mib Wigram and Miss Murray-Aynsiey earned them a .highly-meritorious, though slightly unexpected victory over Mr and Mrs Joynt, ami it seemed to successfully check tha rapidity of tho scoring of tho United first string, Miss Rutherford and Pcnn. With Miss RutherfoTd etill requiring to make tho rover hoop, Mr 3 Wigram pegged Pcnn out, but she left a fcrty-foot shot to Miss Rutherford, who promptly hit. and went out. In the Handicap Third Division a- very popular winner was Mra Johnson, of Sumner. Sho has been improving all tho season, and proved a little too strong for Mrs Hobbs (St. Albans) .in tho final. Tho game, however, was thoroughly well contested,' Mrs Hobbs - forcing 1 out of her opponent her start, of 1J bisques. Tho Secosd Division promises a most interesting final, Miss Smith, who just beat Miss Ccawshaw, having to face Mise Gosset. She gets a bisqxio, and tho chances appear to bo exactly even. Miss Gcssot qualified by defeating in a fine gamo Mrs Murray-Aynsiey. But the best game of the day was tho match between Miss White and -its Murray-Ayns-iey. Miss Whito conceded 1 biso.no, and Beemed all over a winnor, but her opponent got both her balls cound to the rover hoop, and -then accidentally pegged out her rover ball, hit in again, and playing single croquet, made a splendid approach to tho rover hoop, ran tho hoop, and finally won tho game. It was a splendid recovery, though somewhat hard on Miss Whito, who had played good consistent croquet. In tho First Division, Lill found 1 bisquo an insufficient start from Chambers. The game, howevor, was a regular ding-dong affair, but Chambers won, and camo with the final. In the lower half Mrs Will Geemcd certain* to beat Butterworth, who very incautiously mado his black j* rover. Using her last bisquo, Mrs Will ■went in pursuit of black with red and yellow in turn, and mado two splendid breaks, but blue hitting in started around from tho third hoop, and went out: Play will be resumed, wet or fine, at 9.30 to-niorrow, thero being nino matches still to play.
