» / - THREAT OF A STRIKE WITHDRAWN. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TEriHGRAM.) WELLINGTON, December 27. The danger of a tramway strike is over. The tramway men have withdrawn their threat to go out on New Year's Evo unless a certain inspector ia removed from tho eerviee. Instead, they ask that a special meeting of the City Council bo called by the Mayor* At this meeting they are prepared to lay a definite list of charges against the inspector, and bring evidence to support them. This evidence is to be given in open council for the Press to specially report. ' Tho avoidance of a striko is stated to bo duo entirely to the efforts of the Mayor (Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P.) who, on tho eve of his departure for a health-recruiting voyage to England, held a conference with the men for several hours before finally inducing them to withdraw their threat to striko. The conference took place in tho Town Hall to-day. The executive of tho Tramways Union met the Mayor in his room at about 11 o'clock, and placed their side of the case before him. Mr, Wilford was firm on tho necessity for the withdrawal of the threat. / Tho conference was prolonged into the afternoon, and at times the tramway men consulted in private. Finally, shortly before 3 o'clock, they agreed to withdraw the threat of a strike. Their agreement was couched in the following letter to the Mayor: 'To his Worship tho Mayor,—Dear sir.—l beg to forward you the following resolution passed by the executive of the Tramway Employees' Union today. (Signed) A. Sutherland, secretary.' ■"' At » special meeting of the Council this afternoon, the Council accepted the foregoing letter, and fixed the special meeting to hold the enquiry for next "Wednesday.
