FOR THE CHILDREN.

triE TRE.\T OF THE SEASON. PUBLIC SCHOOLS' SPORTS. On Saturday, in a "strong nor'-wester, -* the North Canterbury Public Schools' : *. An:atour Athletic Association held its tffrlFth annual snorte meeting at LanPark. In all ex-cnts the fields were large, and in most of them ' competition was very close. Tho bova put up some fino performances, ' onii .or two showing really oxct-p----t-'oaal promise. Aβ for tiio £irls, numbers of them made it clear that ■ the broad ai-horism, '"women cannot rtin "did not have application to very - ' \ouhk ladies. Probably because- of tho windy ncather, and possibly bocaiiso of'tho fact that the show had not been *'bcomc<l" as it deserved, there wns in the morning a vt-ry poor fchowinß of adults; in .the afternoon ' tho crowd was much thicker, and tho • spectacular events were watchwl with interest by many proud parents. The full possibilities ot the meeting hive not tet-been realised. Twolvo Sarsaco'MrP. Tho first sports were successful, and each succeeding year they have gono better than jn the year before. Ot those- who trero at'tho first meeting few havo lost their interest, and amongst Saturday's officials one saw tho names of Messrs P. fcVlia. G. Mason, T. Aschman, L. B. "Wood, and P. Mcnzies. Already it ' ia producing boys and girls of "ood physique, likely to grow into healthy men and -women; it brings out many potential .athletes and inculcates in many tho good I spirit of the amateur —"sport ior ' sport's sake." It only remains for those -who arc interested in amateur athletics to see that these boys are 'riven the training that will tend to perfect them, to show them how to make the most of themselves. Tho Boys' Championship Shield was oasilv won by East Christchurch with &> mints, Lyttolton Vest wero w«"jd with 29, and Addinston third with Isß. The (Jills' Championship Shield was won by Voolston with 74 points, himwood being second with 2», and 1 apanui third with 18. The i'jite receipts for the day amounted to alxVuf £70. At the conclusion of tho sports, (several massed dwrfave were mndo. Four battalions of cadets marched past • tho saluting post—at which stood Vaptain .Stevens, acting-commandant ot tlio Junior Forces —in excellent order. Captain Stevens afterwards congratulated tho officers on tho fine bearing and excellent work of tho cadets, which, no said, had como as a great surprise to hini. Then followed a fireat march of girls' squads. Tho girls—with a 'c\v • ' toys—to the number of several hundreds then drew iin in front of tho eastern stand, and. Several combined physical exercises were prettily executed, el.citin« loud applause. A Jioop-dnl display was given by tlio infants, a dumbbell display by tho junior girb, and a club drill display by tho senior girls to a musical accompaniment by 3>erry 3 band. Then followed a massed display of clubs and dumbbells, and a, Rrand display of flag and hoop drill. It was .a very pretty eight and well merited tho applause it received.
