The Press. MONDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1911. "GIVE MASSEY A CHANCE."
The question which the electors have to decide on Thursday next is not the retention of the Ward Government ■ " in power. That, we aro convinced, has practically already been decided in the negative. To any .student of the situation it is now clear that the only alternatives aro: (1) Whether the two parties should come back evenly .. divided; or (2) whether Mr Massey shall bo given a fair working majority. If tho first is adopts, wo shall simply hove weakness and inefficiency introduced into our political affairs at a - - time when a sane and strong government is urgently required. • Tho country is calling out for a change, - - and should tako, care that it made effective. A government led by Mr 'Massoy, end composed of men of progressive ideas, would, if possessed of a working majority, introduce new life and new vigour into tho legislative body; and cause new blood to.course through the commercial veins of.tho oountry. Sir Jpsoph TYard is so. so completely playedout "that ..oven if ho had been ( returned with a good • * majority, ho could have done nothing to lift thg country out of stagnation, so plainly hod he reached tho end of his tether.' Obviously nothing ie to bo gained by sending back tho same Prim* Ministor, accompanied by as many' of his played-out colleagues as can. secure re-election, and expecting them to accomplish anything in tho face of an obvious turn in public opinion. The , - time hfla now come for tho electors to 1 "give Massey-a chance, , * and thoy should ceo to it that it is a fair and -reasonable chance they are giving him, so that he may be in a position,to do . real and solid sornoe for the oountry.
