His Excellency the Governor visited Oamaru for the first time yesterday, arriving from the South at 11.30 a.m. Ho was accorded a civic welcome at tho station, and-presented with au address. His Excellency was afterwards entertained at luncheon in the Town Hall by the Mayor and Councillors and other citizens. In tho afternoon he visited tho Waitaki High School sporta. In tho evening he was the guest of Mr John Iteid, of Elderslie. Colonel Collins, Auditor-General, with Mrs and Miss Collins, arrived from Timara on Thursday evening, Mr G. Hogben, Inspector-General of Schools, arrived from Wellington by the Mararoa yesterday morning. Mr and Mrs. J, Garrard ireturn-ed to Lyttelton from a visit to Sydney by tho Ulimaroa yesterday morning. Visitors to town include: —Messrs W. W. Bruco (Wellington), P. Schaefol (Wellington), A. E. Wilson (Birmingham), Geo. Patterson (Birmingham), Geo. Macgregor (Duuedin), J. Ziedenstein (London), Thos. McKellar (Dunodin), Chas. O, McKellar (Duncdin), T. H. Edwards (Sydney), A. Death (Hawera), L. L. Woodroffo (Auckland), P. J. Taylor (Dmiedin), T. G. Leifc-h (Wellington), Captain C. E. Andrews (Timaru), Mr J. H. Barr, of the head offico of tI.J Tourist Department, who has boen relieving at the local tourist bureau for the past few weeks, returned to Wellington last evening. Sir John Kirk, who is in tho Dominion in connection with the Ragged School Union, arrives in Christchurch on Monday, ami during his stay here will be the guest of Bishor> Julius. Sir John will bo tendered a civic welcome at 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday, and in tho" evening will , givoari address on the work of the Ragged School Union in the King's Theatre, at which his Excellency tho Governor -will probably preside. Mr E. G. Stavelcy for many years manager of the Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co;. Ltd., in Christchurch, has retired from that position, and 4s starting in business on liis own account as stock and station agent, auctioneer, etc. Mr Stavcloy's many friends will wish him every success in his new venture. Messrs H. Moore, 8.-Moritzson, F. C. Whitney, and W. Rutherford, left for Dunedin by the Ulimaroa yesteri day. The Rev. Mr Kerley and Mr J. L. i Ower left for Melbourne. by, tho Ulimaroa yesterday. Major and Mrs Richardson left for Wellington by the Mararoa last evoning. Mr 11. W. Kelly, a former representative- footballer, and one who has taken an active part in Rugby administration, having acted as honorary treasurer for tho last two years to the New Zealand Rugby Union, li:js becii appointed manager of tho' Wanganui branch of tho New Zealand Insurance Company. Mr Kelly was attucnoJ to tho Wellington ofh'ce. Mr Harold Cooper, son of Mr Justice Cooper, has taken the M.U., B.Sc decrees in addition to his L.R.C.P (London) and M.R.C.S. (England). Then* was a crowded attendance of members and friends, and tho president of t'r'o Union (Mr W. Daniels) occupied tho chair. After the health of Mr Hannav had been enthusiastically honoured, the Chairman presented him with a travelling rug for Mrs Hannay, and a case

of pipes for himself, subscribed for by the members of the Union. Mr Daniels referred to the zealous and capable manner in which Mr Hannay had carried out his arduous and 'responsible duties during the fifteen years he had been in Lyttelfccn. On behalf of the Union he wished Mr and Mrs Hannay every happiness. (Loud applause.) in replying, Mr Hannay thanked the members of the Union for their good wishes and their gifts, and formally declared the recently enlarged and renovated Social Hall open. A number of toasts iinda musical programme combined to make a very pleasant evening. Mr Hannay is retiring, after 34 years' Active service in the Railway Department. Ho first joined at Lyttelton, and subsequently was for over nine years st.itionmaster at Bluff, and six and a Tialf years at Greymouth, and has just completed nearly fifteen years as stationmaster at Lyttelton.
