G. and G. Douglas, C. T. Midlane, and L. J. Bagnall. Mr G. Laurenson, M.P., is suffering from a severe cold, but expects to be out and about in a day or so. His Excellency the oovernor gaT© a dinner party at Government House last night, and the following had the honour of receiving invitations: —Sir George and Lady Clifford, Sir Charles and Lady Bowen, Mr Justice and Mrs Denni-ton, tho Bishop of Christchurch and Mrs Julius, Hon. S. Gray went North last evening. He will be away for about a fortnight on work connected with the prohibition movementThe Rev. Father Peoples arrived from Wellington yesterday. Tho Chinese Consul for New Zealand (Mr Chew Si Lanchu) paid an official visit to the Mayor yesterday morning. Mr E. J. Righton, who has been on a short visit to Wellington, roturned to town yesterday. Mr J. W. Salinoud, Solicitor-General, has resigned his position on the State Guaranteed Advances Board, and the vacancy has been fillefl by tne appointment of Mr F. W. Flanagan, ValuerGeneral. Tho following ministers arrived from Wellington by tho Maori yesterday morning en route to Dun-din to attend the Presbyterian General Assembly:—Revs. Dr. Gibb, J. K. Elliott, A. Thomson, A. Doull, A. Walker, J. A. Asher, Tait, J. McKenzio, D. Martin, Finlayson, and J. A. McKenzie. Mr T. Parata, M.P., who was at Kaiapoi on Monday, left for tho south yesterday. Mr C. Holdsworth, general managor of the Union Steam Ship Company, left for Wellington last night. Captain McDougall, marine superintendent of tlie Shaw, Savfll and Albion lino, loft for Wellington by the Maori last ni_;ht. Messrs Newton King, C. F. Mark, J. F. Cato, and D. C. Turnbull were passengers for Wellington by the Maori last night. Arrivals in town yesterday included Messrs S. J. Adams (Waimato), S. J. Hyslop (Wellington), J. Guild (Temuka), R. Irving. 0. Scott, S. Mackenzie (Timaru), J. Gow, _>. Maning (Oamaru), J. W. Grant (Gray's Hill), H. J. Friedlander (Ashburton), C. Smart (Fairlie), R. N. Breckman, J. Allen (Dunedin), C. R. Rutherford (Mendip Hills), F. H. Harley -.Knst Oxford). Major T. W. McDonald, officer commanding the. junior cadets, will leave Wellington at tho end of this month for England, where ho will be attached for twelve months to tho regular forces nt Aldershot. During his absence Major McDonald's duties will bo carried on by Captain Stevens. Captain A. W. McArthur Onslow, 16th (The Queen's) Lancers, took up tho duties of instructor in mounted duties and brigade major (acting), Canterbury Mounted Rifles Brigade, on Thursday last.
