SOLAR OBSERVATORY FOR AUSTRALIA.
(special to "the raves.") WELLINGTON, August 1. The British Empire League, of which King George, Queen 'Mary, and Queen Alexandra are patrons, is interesting itself in the establishment of a solar observatory in Australia. It appears that a co-operativo scheme of research has been initiated between the groat solar observatories of Europe., America, aiid India, whereby the sun may be continuously observed throughout tho whole of the twenty-four hours, but a gap exists between the two latter stations •which would be filled by a solar observatory in Australia. From it the sun could be successfully observed when it is hidden in Europe and unfavourably situated for observation from the stations of India and America. Tho study of solar phenomena is of great scientific and of especial value to meteorologists. Mr Dealrin, while Prime Minister of the Commonwealth, promised £1500 a year towards the upkeep of such an observatory ,in Australia if £10,000 were privately subscribed. £4000 has already been offered, and tho secretary of the Empire League, Norfolk House, London, is now inviting subscriptions to make up the balance ot £6000 still required.
