EXEMPTION AREA DEFINED.
Last wreck's "Gazette" annoumM the special areae in tho Dominion which, for tho puri>oßos of the Defence Act of 1910, havo been exempted tfrom tho compulsory training prorisiona. The areas affecting Canterbury are as follow:—
Area No. 4.—The territory in the Nelson, Maryborough, Canterbury, and v ■, Westland land districts bounded towards tho north by a right line ma- f ning duo east from the summit of the' Brunner Range to Mount Mount Baring, the northenimdst point of Lake Rotoiti. Beoby's Knob. Fortyeight Knob, north-east to Gordon's Knob, to tho confluence of the Clarence and Branch rivers, on to tho southeast by tho Clarence Rivor to the bend at the junction of roads near JolKo's Pass, the confluence of tho River Hanmer and Boundary Creek, south by the River Hanmer to its confluence ' with tho Waiau-ua River, via that river to its confluence with the River Hope, the Hope Rivor to its uouroe, the confluence of tho Trent and Tutaikuri Rivers, the Tutaikuri River to its confluence with the Waiheki River, to the north-western corner of Lake Haupiri, to Lake Hill, the confluence of the Grey and Alexander Rivers, thence by the leading spur and tho watershed over Mount Haaefc and Mount Burnett to the Victoria Rango, the summit of the i Victoria and 'Brunner Ranges, and on to a point due west of Mount Mantell, the place of commencement. Area No, s.—The territory in the Wostlandj Canterbury, Otago, and Southland land districts bounded on the north-east by the Waitaha Eiver \ from the sea to its source, dv© east to the summit ot the Southern Alr>s. south-east to the confluence of the Godloy and Maoaulay Rivers, tho northernmost point of Lake Ohau, the summit of Terrace Peak, the month of Rumbling Burn on the western side of X>ako WanaEa, the southern point of Loehnagar, the confluence of the Dart River and the Routeburn, via the Boutebura to its source and due west to the watershed east of the Hollyford River, east by that watershed end the watershed over David Peaks and Moffai Peak to tho source of "Winton Born, Winton Burn to its confluence with the ivuiraroa River, east to tho eumnrit of the Thompson Mountains, the watershed east of the Mararoa Rivor, and tho summit of tho Takitimo Mountains to Cornet Peaks, to the confluence of Ligar Creek with the Wa?a.u Hirer, and on to the waterehed east of haim Monowai, by the watershed east of Lakes Monowai and Hauroto to the Hump. t« Bourco of Track Burn, down to its moofch at Tewaewae Bay, and thence towards south, west, and north. west by the sea to the Waitaha River, the place of commencement.
