CASUALTIES.

An inquest was held at the Female Refuge, Essex street, Linwood, yesterday afternoon, before Mr H. W. Bibhoi>, District Coroner, touching the death of a malo child, which died a few minutes after birth. Dr. Duncan, who mado a post-mortem examination, stated that tho cause of death was atelectasis, the expansion of the lungs being defective. A verdict in accordance with the medical cvidenco was returned.

AUCKLAND, July 31. On the 24th inst., an inmate of tho Avondalo Mental Hospital, named Johansen, was working with' another man, an Austrian, on the hospital farm, when ho was attacked by his companion and struck over the head with a spade. Johansen was badly hurt and died to-day.

INVERCARGILL July 31. A fatal accident befel Edward Jones, agod 32, whilo following tho Birchwood Hounds, adjacent to Luinsden township, on .Saturday. His horse,stumbled -whilst taking a fence. Jones chmg to the rems, but fell heavily to the ground, fracturing his /skulh Hβ died yesterday morning. Ho was a son of Mr Edward Jones, butcher, Lumsden.
