THE GREAT WHITE SCOURGE.
ro THE EDITOB OF "THB PRESS." Sir,—As prevention is, admittedly, better than cure, I think it would be a wise proceeding, on the part of ths Goramant, if it caused to bo eompu«d, printed, and distributed to ©very household in this oountry, a pamphlet or booklet of "What to do and what not to do" to endeavour to stamp out, or at least minimise, the progress of consumption in the human race. I am positive that, in proper treatment for prevention lies tho major part of the desired object. My suggestion is inexpensive and feasible throughout; and, as the cure lies greatly in the exercise of common-sense on prcfperly directed lines for prevention or euro, teaching must, bo made plain. Firstly th© interest of parents must bo awakanod to whai they Should do themselves, can do, from the time of (or -prior to) birth of their children, and through their earliest years; then teach the subject in all schools as a primary course, and provide continuing studios. Direct contact with oonKun-ptives is not absolutely neoesaajry for the spread of the disease; there is so mrutfi done or neglected, now, ijbat induces ii>. The germs of consumption are always about, ready to im-glant tJtemaehi-a in weak-
ened constitutions or surroundings far- I ourable to growth. Th© dread of loss of offspring s&ould, surely, be sufficient jnoentivo to all parents to learn "what to do, and what not to do" to combat this dreaded and decimating disease. —Yours, etc., ARTHUR APPLEBY.
