SHIPPING NOTES.

A number of important changes have been made in the commands of several of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamers. Captain F Forbt-J, late cf tho Ruapefau, has taken charsre of tho Kuahino, iv piaoe of Captain H E.~ Gieezstrcet, who is to tako command of tho new liner Remuera. Captain E. T Smith, R.N.R., hao taken command of tho Or&ri in place of Captain J. P. Forsdick, who will have charge cf the large new cargo steamer Hurunui, which is now being built at Glasgow. Although several largo cargoes of irozen meat and general produce havo been shipped from .New Zealand ports during the past month thero seems to be a great tailing eff in cargo 'available for export. In consequence, the biR shipping companies aro sending a number of their cargo steamers across to Australia to load for Home, instead of laying them up in Sour Zealand ports. After a long passage of thirty days from Edithbunr. tho locally-owned barouo Rona- arrived at Timaru on Saturday. Tho vessel left the South Australian port on May 18th. and was delayed on tho passage by adverse winds. Sho was a week makinff her way from tho vicinity of tho Bluff to Timaru. The vessel has a cargo of salt for Timaru and Lyttelton, and is duo here next week to complete discharging. She will load produce hero for Auckland, and -will proceed thenco to Hokianga. to load timber for Sydney. Tho schooner Lily, which.left Lyttelton on Sunday morning,' 11th inst., arrived at Greymouth at 3 p.m. on Saturday, after a passage of six days. After discharging her cargo of produce, the Lily will load timber at Greymouth for Lyttelton. Tha schooner Annio Hill arrived in tho stream on Saturday night, after a long passage of eleven days from Greyroouth. She iett tho Grey on Tuesday, 6th inst., End for the first two days out had a rough time battling against eirorig nortnerly galea. After that a fair wind carried her through, Cook Sirait, but yesterday week sho encountered a strong south-west gale, in which «he was hoveto for ten hours. King, acting assistant marine superintendent for the Union Steam fcShip Company, arrived in Lyttelton from Dunedin by the Tarawcra on Saturday morning, and returned in the evening by the Victoria. Mr Davidson, late acting second engineer of the Tnkapuna, has joined the Msraroa as third engineer. Mr W. H. Hiolop, latoof ths Mararoa, is to. join tho Rakanoa as second engineer in place of Mr McCaig, who transferp to the Waiteroata. 1 The turbine ferry steamer Maori arrived at 610 am. on Saturday after a smart run ,of ten hours from Wellington. Sho went into dry dock at 7 o'clock, and was cleaned and repainted, her hull being given two coate of paint below the water line. Her propellore were slsa examined, and fitted with new conea. Tho Maori was floated put of dock ot 5 p.m., and Bailed in the evening for Wellington. In last week's "Gazette" manners were warned to look out for tho buoy which will be used in connection the survey work to bft carried on by-tho Terra Nova between Capo Maria Van Diemen and the Three Kings during July, August, Rnd September. . Tho Fedoral-Houlder-Shire Line steamer Morayshire arrived yesterday morning from Timaru to complete loading for West of England ports. The vessel, has a largo quantity of frozen meat, grain ,etc, to load here, and is taking a number of passengers for England. She is to eail to-morrow afternoon for Avonmouth, Liverpool, Manchester, and Glasgow. The Arapawa arrived last night from Wellington, and will sail this afternoon, talcing cariro for Wellington, Wangarmi, and Patea, The destination of the Defender has been changed from Wellington and Kteraniea, to Pioton and Hokitika. She will load ct\pgo today for tho latter ports, and will eail this evening.
