CABLES AND TELEGRAPHS.
REDUCED RATES FAVOURED. United Press Association— By Electric Tek graph—Copjright. LONDON, Juno 15. Mr Asquith presided at to-day's sitting of the Conference, when cable and telegraph matters were discussed. Sir Joseph "Ward's motion for cheaper cable rates wa s adopted, tho resolution reading:—
"That, in view of the social and commercial advantages which would result from an increase in facuiciee for inter-communication Detween tho more distant Dominions and Great Britain, it is desirable that all possible means be taken to secure .a reduction in cable rates throughout tho Empire."
Mr Herbert Samuel, British Post-mastor-General stated that the steps that had been taken had already secured reduction in various directions, including Press rates. Replying to Mr Pearce, ho said that ho would urae tho Treasury to consent to the Pacific Board constructing a second New Zealand cable.
Mr Poaree, in moving a resolution for a State-owned Atlantic cable, outlined a scheme, which Sir Joseph Ward sup;vorted.
Mr Samuel declared that tho expenditure was unjustified at present. Ho proposed tho following motion, which was carried :—
"That unless tho Atlantic cnblo companies from timo to time their rates, the various Govermne'us will consider tho desirableness of kvjng a State-owned cab!e."
The Australian and New Zealand resolutions wero withdrawn in favour of Mr Samuel's motion.
