SINGLE TAX.

TO THE KDITOH OF "TirE IT.nSS."

Sj l% —;V number of Unions havo been passing resolutions recently in favour of Single Tax. .Surely they have not studied tlio question, or they would realise how disastrous ifc would bo to the industries of the Dominion. Single Tnx means that all taxation is placed upon the land, and consequentiy all Custom duties abolished, free traderules.

The Dominion would bs the dumping ground of all the cheap 'Jabour of the world, and the industries that havo been fostered for years would bo destroyed', and tho labourers dismissed. Recently the slaughtermen and . foltmonper.s were asking for an export duty on skins, and last week passed a motion in favour of Single Tax; they can't havo both.

The ironmasters were appealing to the Farmers' Union to agree to an increased tariff on ironwork, in which they had the support of their employees, anti next week the brass and iron workers passed a resolution in favour of SingloTax- How ridiculous.

All these Single. Tax resolutions aro much the same, so I suppose they aro forwarded to the various Unions by tho •Single Tax League, and passed without thought. They appear to think they are having another shot at tho farmers, and do not recognise- that it vitally concerns themselves. The single tax advocate is -very careful to keep this side carefully in the background, but all is not gold that glitters, and of what value is it to the worker to confiscate the farmers' land by taxation, and at the same time destroy the industry by which this worker gains a livelihood by allowing single tax free trade? Think of our woollen industry, our boot factories, and all tho industries that live because protected.— Yours, etc., WELSHMAN.
