AUCKLAND; May 28. I At the Supremo Court yesterday, afternoon Daniel Cuthbert O'Brien/ charged with a criminal assault on a girl, was found guilty by tho jury aud sentenced to ten years' hard labour. AUCKLAND, May 27. At tho Supreme Court, to-day, William Osborne, a seaman, was charged with manslaughter, arising out of an assault committed on a woman, Mary Gilchrist, with whom ho had been living, and in respect of which he had served three months' imprisonment, the woman having died subsequently to the hearing of the case in the lower Court. Accused sought to show that the woman died from major injuries sustained while ho was in prison. .
The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and accused was sentenced to four years' imprisonment with hard labour. WELLINGTON. May 25.
To-day the Chief Justice heard an application by Charlotte Powiok, wife of Joseph Powick, carpenter, of Christchurch, and daughter of John Heberley, of Picton, deceased, to vary his will. She had been excluded owing to a disagreement with her father. She owed £100, and her health was bad. and she was dependent on her husband's earnings. The point of law is similar to that in the Allardico case, now before tho Privy Council. The case was adjourned for a medical certificate, the Judge saying that she micht receive aid.
